Circus Summer Camps & Intensives


We offer a variety of circus summer camps in NW Portland for ages 5 - teens! Circus camps are highly physical and also exercise your child’s creativity. Circus camps cover tumbling, trapeze, juggling, theatre, dance and more, and each week finishes with a performance. Spend your summer making art in our light-filled, air-conditioned gym!

After-care is provided in partnership with our neighbor, Playdate PDX, and early drop-off is also offered. Find the information on childcare below.

Keeping them Moving: Little Circus Summer Camp

Ages: 5 & 6
Level:
All levels welcome!

Our Little Circus Camp offers a fun, guided way to discover circus arts. Each day starts with an engaging warm up to help students become accustomed to the space and ready for the jumping and bending we’ll do throughout the morning. Students will participate in rotations in aerial, acrobatics, tumbling, and juggling. At the end of the morning students will hone their stage skills with theater games integrating the fundamentals of performance. We will explore musicality, creativity, and joy in movement, while developing social skills such as taking turns and following directions.
Our supportive coaches will be there at every step of the way to help each student work toward individual goals in a fun and friendly team atmosphere. Each week of camp will conclude in an end­-of-­week showcase for friends and family on Friday at 11:00am!

Keeping it Unique: Summer Camps for Kids

Whether your child is ready to climb into the air for the first time, or wants to push their circus skills to the next level, our camps offer immersion in a wide array of circus arts. Each day starts with a vigorous dance based warm-up to prepare students for the bending, jumping, twisting, and flying we’ll do throughout the day.  Students are then placed into groups based on age, skill, and experience to move through our core classes in aerial, acrobatics, tumbling, and juggling. Students also hone their performance skills and get their funny on with a theater and performance workshop. 
Our supportive coaches will be there at every step of the way to help each student work toward individual goals in a fun and friendly team atmosphere. The Kid Circus Camp is a great fit for students newer to circus or currently in Kid Circus Fundamentals 1 or 2. We will do our best to challenge all students that attend. Each week of camp will conclude in an end­ of­ week showcase for friends and family on Friday at 2:30pm!

Keeping it Distinct: Summer Camps for Kids/Teens

Each day starts with a vigorous dance warm-up to prepare students for the bending, jumping, twisting, and flying we’ll do throughout the day.  Students are then placed into groups based on age, skill, and experience to move through our core classes in aerial, acrobatics, tumbling, and juggling. Students will hone their performance skills with a theater and performance workshop. The week of camp will conclude in an end­-of-week showcase for friends and family on Friday at 2:30pm!

Circus Performance Camp

Ages: 8 - 13 years
Level:
Must have attended at least one circus camp or circus class at the Circus Project or similar experience elsewhere.

Our Performance camp offers an opportunity for your child to immerse themselves in the creative process! Students focus on both individual skill building as well as ensemble performance to create an original show that will be presented to a public audience (as well as friends & family!) at Sunday Parkways. Students newer to circus welcome!

  • Camp time: 9 am - 3 pm Monday-Friday

  • Performance on Sunday, June 30th at Portland Sunday Parkways. Time commitment approximately 10am-3pm.

Aerial (Only!) Camp

Ages: 8 - 13 years
Level: For Intermediate to advanced students!

Students should be able to climb an aerial rope or fabric at least 10 feet, be comfortable going upside down on aerial equipment, able to hang from knees for 20 seconds and hang with straight arms from a bar for 30 seconds.
Great for students currently in Kids Circus Fundamentals 2, Teens Circus or Youth Aerial  (please contact us for questions)

A week of skill building for active kids and young teens, this camp will include static trapeze, dance trapeze, aerial fabric, aerial rope, and aerial hoop. While building on a foundation in aerial technique, students will be challenged to integrate artistry and creative expression into their aerial movement to create choreography and bring their skills of the next level.  

This week of camp will conclude in an end­-of-week showcase for friends and family on Friday at 2:30pm!

Summer Performance Intensive

Ages: 11-18 (or by coach approval)
Level: By audition. Previous experience in aerial arts, dance, gymnastics, or other performing/movement arts is required.

This is a summer-long, audition-only program for Portland area youth and young adults interested in intensive, performance-focused summer training in the expressive circus arts. Previous experience in aerial arts, dance, gymnastics, or other performing/movement arts is required. The summer will include nine weeks of intensive training over a 10-week period in theatrical performance, circus arts and acrobatics with select, high-level coaches, as well as a trip to the American Youth Circus Organization (AYCO) festival in San Diego the week of August 14th (exact travel dates TBD). Students can expect to participate in five public performances!

  • Dates: June 17th-August 23rd (no rehearsal July 1st-July 5th)

  • Rehearsals: 2:30pm to 5:30pm, Monday-Friday

  • Auditions: Sunday, April 7th 5:00-6:30pm. Come prepared to learn new skills, participate in strength and flexibility drills, and show 1 minute of your own skills. Registration deadline Tuesday, April 2nd. Email frontdesk@thecircusproject.org if you have any questions.

  • Pricing: The tuition cost for the program is $3,000. AYCO festival and related travel costs not included. Monthly payment plans and limited scholarships are available; please inquire for scholarship form.

Members will be expected to devote several hours a week to individual training and related homework assignments outside of rehearsals/group training.

Members will be committed to traveling to and participating in all scheduled performances, some of which will fall on weekend dates, between June 30th and August 25th, 2019. Required dates will be confirmed by mid-May. Company Members are responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs for performances/festivals. Payment plans are available for travel expenses.


Mini-SPI

Ages: 8-15 years
Level: Must be approved for youth acro, youth aerial or youth specialty classes at the Circus Project. Assessment required for students not attending Circus Project Classes currently.

A one-week version of our summer-long Summer Performance Intensive, this camp is for the experienced, enthusiastic youth circus artist! Students will work with the Summer Performance Intensive on an ensemble piece as well as develop small group or solo acts for a public performance at Portland Sunday Parkways.

  • August 19-23 with a performance on August 25

  • Camp time: 2:30 - 5:30 pm Monday-Friday, Sunday approximately 10am - 4pm.

Early Drop-off and After-care

Early Drop-Off

For camps that begin at 9 am, you’re welcome to drop off your child as early as 8:30 for no extra charge. Early drop-off can be arranged as early as 7am for $5/half-hour (in half-hour increments until 8:30am). Please send your child with a book or other quiet activity and prepare them to sit patiently until camp starts at 9am.

After-care

For camps that finish at 3pm, there is a 15-minute grace period until 3:15pm, staying past 3:15 will incur a charge for the full half-hour of care. After-care is offered until 5:30pm in partnership with our neighbors, Playdate PDX. We will walk over to Playdate PDX as a group and a Circus Project staff member will supervise as your child enjoys open play in their large indoor playground. After-care is $5/half-hour.

Pay increments are based on pre-planned drop-off/pick-up time - late pick-ups or early drop-offs will be billed for added care time.

If you book aftercare within 48 hours, there will be an additional $5 administrative fee added.

There is no walk-in option for child care, it must be pre-arranged.
